Carrier’s Liability Insurance – what protection does it really offer? Does it really help to secure our goods?
Carrier’s Liability Insurance, as the name suggests, is a carrier’s friend that covers only claims for which the carrier is legally liable. Carrier’s Liability Insurance operates within transport law limits, such as the CMR Convention, with liability limits and exclusions that apply. We have to remember that in transport, Carrier’s Liability Insurance does not protect the value of the goods. For full coverage, Cargo Insurance is required.
- So what does Carrier’s Liability Insurance protect? To fully answer this question, we need to take a look at some rules that apply to this type of insurance:
- It covers only claims for which the carrier is legally liable
- It does not cover claims exceeding legal liability limits
- It does not cover improper or poor packaging
- It does not cover inherent defects of the goods
- It does not cover unforeseeable and unavoidable events
- In short, not every claim against a carrier is covered by Carrier’s Liability Insurance. What is the standard value coverage under Carrier’s Liability Insurance? In road transport, the standard liability limit is 8.33 SDR per kilogram of gross weight.
